Week 10: Leading Through Uncertain & Anxious Times - PART ONE

03/19/2020 11:00

Hi all,

This shortened and (let's face it) stressful week, I am assigning you to carefully read a Fast Company article I came across while on a business trip in the year 2000. PLEASE READ REFLECTIVELY. Here it is:

www.fastcompany.com/38853/do-you-have-will-lead (scroll down past ad)

Here it is in DOC form - and note,  though I have highlighted parts, you are asked to read the entire article:

Do You Have the Will to Lead.D.doc (54784)

As soon as I got off the flight, I contacted the subject of this article, Dr. Peter Koestenbaum, and arranged to meet with him in Santa Monica. I consider him a personal gamechanger; as a mentor to me, he helped me hone leadership strengths in a fast-paced unpredictable business. To this day, I credit him with helping me face uncertainty, and even chaos, with more grace and integrity than I'd previously possessed.

Please refer to the specific instructions to your right, to find the reflective work I am asking you to deliver to me no later than midnight, SUNDAY March 29th. The number of writings I need to carefully examine preclude my ability to handle late work. I want to respond personally to each if I can.

Assignment due Sunday, March 29th no later than MIDNIGHT

Send me an email (lclark-borre@csuchico.edu), with the following SUBJECT LINE: 460-01 DUE 3-29 - (OR 02 for PM Class

Please answer the following questions thoughtfully for 5 points each. I'll credit generously, but with an eye to the throughtfulness and clarity of the answer. Answer each question with at least three sentences, more if you are inclined to share more.

1. What does Koestenbaum propose is the reason that leadership is so difficult today?

2. Koestenbaum describes "a defect" that underlies our difficulties in leading/managing people and organizations today. In your own words, explain what Koestenbaum thinks is missing from most people's experience that prevents them from attaining leadership capacity.

3. Did you find this reading valuable? Explain your answer. What did you find most interesting - or concerning -  about the article?
